TO:CA Wooden LED Clock: Get wood

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

This is a pretty stylish looking clock from Kouji Iwasaki. The body of the clock is constructed from a block of wood, and when you plug it in the LED numbers appear like magic on the face of the block. i’m not sure how exactly they do it, perhaps using Japanese black magic.

Sexy Beijing: San Ba! Woman’s day

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

I really enjoy this series from Su Fei. For the uninitiated Su Fei is a foreigner living in Bejing. She explores and investigates the different cultural anomalies and traditions of the Chinese. It’s all wrapped in a silly Sex in the City type spin, which seems a bit unnecessary at times, but she pulls it off with true geek chic. Here she investigates the Woman’s holiday San Ba and raises questions about the context of the word in relation to the holiday.

Check out this eye catching metal fish shaped watering can – now on sale at the Smithsonian Store. This guy looks a wee bit like the nearly mythical coelacanth, and would be a worthy addition to any garden.

Tongue Twister Nut Cracker

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

More Japanese gameshow fun here…The rules of the game appear to be stand there like a giddy ninny (or run around), and then get bitchslapped in the ballsack by a spring loaded spatula for not being able to correctly recite an impossible tongue twister.

If this doesn’t sell you on purchasing nice land boat, I am not sure what will. This is what you call job satisfaction, watch as poor Jack fumbles and curses his way through numerous attempts to sell you a Winnebago.

Russian Animation: Hedgehog

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

Like most modern cultures Russia and it’s neighboring provinces have a rich history of animation. Most of which we here in the US are unfamiliar with unless you visit art film houses for foreign festivals. The Russians have a beautiful style of animation and well known for their frame by frame stop motion techniques. A quick search on Youtube brings up loads of fun ones, here is a cute little animation featuring the travels of a hedgehog.

Cabin Fever: PANCAKES!

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

This movie is a few years old now, and was a surprise hit for Lionsgate (directed by Eli Roth). Overall it’s not the best in the recent crop of horror film, holds no water compared to “28 days” for example, but certainly worth a casual afternoon horror viewing. This scene was really hilarious and a total random surprise. The film features college students, a cabin in the woods, creepy silly locals, with plenty of fun gore scenes.
