Taylor Mali: Just ask him to be honest

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

He will oblige, so maybe be just a tad careful what you ask him FOR. Watch and learn as he lays out exactly what teachers “make”. A snide comment from a lawyer might have set off one of the finest rants about the merits of teaching ever recorded…his passion brings a tear to my eye, and gives me hope that there are still those out there with this much love for such an important profession. I first saw him do this bit on Def Poetry Jam, the Russel Simmons/ Mos Def vehicle from a few years ago, but this is a more inspired performance of it, “definitely beautiful” to watch.

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

And now a message from…Heinz pickles, and pissed off grannies? Don’t screw up and serve grandma a soft pickle…she will have to go all ninja on your ass. Check out this damn funny commercial from the 60′s, and watch Grandma kick some tail as she goes ballistic on the entire restaurant over a soft pickle. She’s looking for a hard pickle, a PROUD pickle…

Strange Dolls: Macabre and delightful creations

Strange Dolls

Beth Robinson has really tapped into something here with her classically styled darkly themed dolls. Since 2003 she has pumped out over 300 of these fascinating and often gruesome creations which are guaranteed to delight those who enjoy Gorey, Brothers Quay, Trevor Brown and other masters mixing cuteness with death and fetish themes.

Each doll is entirely hand made using polymer clays, vintage fabrics, acrylic paint, and sometimes real human hair or teeth. Each piece is one of a kind.

Google Maps

The overlords at Google are watching, and don’t you know it, all sorts of glorious pictures are showing up in the google maps street view…which shows pictures snapped from the streets. It sure is getting creepy isn’t it? Check out this poor chap who is currently reigning number 2 or three on the digg front page (this equates to MANY people have now seen you picking your nose in public). You’ve seen the scene in Minority Report where Cruise has his retina’s scanned for on the spot personalized advertising (and government tracking of course). It’s coming quickly isn’t it.

Check out this site Street Viewer for more voyeuristic fun.

Scott Wade: Poker dogs in the dust

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Scott Wade has chosen a very transitory medium for his art – he calls it his “dirty car art gallery.” In the dust coated back windows of vehicles, he paints images into the dust until your dirty car has become an art canvas. There are a few shots of the artist in action, and some shots of rain washing the pictures away. Makes ya kinda sad……

Poop…

And now a friendly commercial from the lame beer makers at Budweiser. I like to think that the funny folks who created this were well paid for their labors, as this is pretty hilarious. I’m not however tempted i the slightest way to go purchase a Budweiser, but I am pretty far off their target audience. If you enjoy Guinness it’s unlikely you enjoy Budweiser…I’m just saying. It’ll take more than a great commercial, but you’ve got that now, so go back to work on the beer.

Tomer Hanuka Prints: Gruesome and great

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Hanuka’s masterful illustrations are comic book in style with adult themes. This great print is a reference to the excellent book “Life of Pi”. In the book a young Indian boy “Pi” struggles with the concepts of different religions. His family flees his homeland along with their zoo animals, but unfortunately the boat sinks and the young man is trapped on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker. Hijinx ensue…anyway you can and should read the book, it’s well written. Check out this great collection of prints you can purchase, some are pretty gruesome, but so is life…and zombies.

Little Uglyworm: Too cute!

Monday, June 4th, 2007

I am not sure what it is about Ugly Dolls from independent toy designers David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim, but they are just plain hilarious, and the perfect gift for just about anyone with a taste for humor. We have a nice little flock of them, and this little Uglyworm will probably have to be added to the collection.

Uglyworms want power. The power to do great and wonderful things. They want your power.
